Hot stamping cosmetic bottles is the fastest way to put a metallic brand mark on glass, a cap or a tube without adding weight, a label or a second packaging component. A heated die presses a metallized foil onto the surface at roughly 200 °C and 0.3–0.5 MPa, transferring metal only where the die touches, so a 10 mm logo is stamped in seconds and will not lift in transit. The trade-offs are narrow but real: gold and silver still account for more than 80% of hot-stamped finishes, unit cost runs about RMB 0.5–1.5 per bottle (roughly US$0.07–0.21), and the foil has to be ordered before the run starts, which adds 5–7 days to production.

The short answer for buyers

  • Use hot stamping for small metallic marks — a logo, monogram, or 5–15 mm brand line. For large multi-colour artwork, screen printing is cheaper and more flexible.
  • Budget US$0.08–0.15 per unit for one foil plus a US$150–300 one-time die, measured at a 5,000-unit order.
  • Your MOQ is set by the bottle, cap and secondary packaging, not by the decoration — stamping almost never raises the minimum.

“The hot stamping foil market was valued at USD 2.50 billion in 2025, projected to reach USD 2.69 billion in 2026, and is forecast to expand to USD 5.54 billion by 2036 at a 7.5% CAGR.” — Future Market Insights, Hot Stamping Foil Market, 2026. Packaging takes 60% of 2026 revenue, and China grows fastest at 10.1% a year.

Brands keep buying foil because a stamped logo reads as metal on shelf at a fraction of the cost of an actual metal part.

What Is Hot Stamping on Cosmetic Bottles?

Hot stamping — also called hot foil stamping — is a dry decoration process. There is no ink, no solvent and no drying tunnel. A steel or magnesium die carrying your artwork is heated, pressed against a foil ribbon and released; the foil’s colour layer bonds to the substrate only on the raised areas of the die. The foil itself is a four-layer laminate: carrier film, release layer, colour or metallized layer, and adhesive layer, which is why the process behaves differently on glass than on a PP cap.

Typical applications for hot stamping cosmetic bottles are perfume and cologne bottles, cream jars, serum bottles, fragrance caps, lipstick tubes and rigid gift boxes. The finish is glossy, opaque and mechanically tough — it survives handling, cartoning and normal retail abrasion far better than a printed imitation. That hardness is the commercial argument: the mark looks like a metal inlay while costing cents.

Two production realities shape the design. Stamping works best on flat or gently curved surfaces; a faceted or compound-curved bottle distorts die contact and needs special tooling. And hot stamping is usually a second operation: many brands spray or frost the bottle first, then stamp the logo on top, because a matte base makes gold or silver jump. Our glass bottle collection shows how frosting, spraying and clear glass change that contrast.

Which Foil Types Work on Glass, Plastic and Caps?

Foil is a finite palette, not a colour mixer — this is the single most common expectation gap in decoration quotes. Metallized foil holds about 25% of the foil market by type in 2026, ahead of pigment, holographic, effects and scratch-off grades (Future Market Insights, 2026). In cosmetic work you will meet four families:

Foil family Available shades Best substrate and use
Metallized (bright, matte, brushed) Gold, silver, rose gold, champagne, gunmetal Glass perfume bottles, fragrance caps, jar lids — the default luxury look
Pigment Red, blue, green, black, white, opaque pastels Plastic caps and tubes where a matte branded colour beats chrome
Holographic Rainbow, pixel, dot-matrix patterns Limited editions, gift sets, anti-counterfeit accents
Specialty and effects Soft-touch metallic, glitter, tinted chrome Caps, collars and closures that need a tactile difference

Substrate matters more than most spec sheets admit. Soda-lime glass takes a higher die temperature than PP or PET, and moulded caps with release-agent residue may need a primer before the foil holds. On curved closures, rotary tooling keeps registration consistent across the batch — which is why we quote glass and plastic stamping as separate line items rather than one blended decoration price.

What Is the Difference Between Hot Stamping and Screen Printing?

The decision is usually made on artwork size, not on price. Screen printing lays down ink in any Pantone colour and handles multi-colour graphics; hot stamping transfers a single metallic tone with superior reflectivity and wear resistance. Industry comparisons put screen printing at RMB 0.3–0.8 per bottle against RMB 0.5–1.5 for hot stamping, with a 3–5 day cycle for printing versus 5–7 days for stamping because the foil must be ordered to match the artwork (hot stamping glass bottle process guide).

Decision factor Hot stamping Screen printing
Colour range Gold, silver and a limited foil family Full Pantone matching, multi-colour
Artwork area Small: logo, monogram, fine line Small to large, including full-wrap bands
Unit cost (1 colour) RMB 0.5–1.5 per bottle RMB 0.3–0.8 per bottle
Production cycle 5–7 days (foil pre-order) 3–5 days
Best fit Luxury positioning, metallic brand mark Mid-tier skincare, complex graphics, ingredient text

Many launches use both. A coloured screen-printed base with a gold stamped logo on top gives a layered, dimensional look that neither process produces alone — and it costs less than expected: a combined silk-screen plus one-foil job adds roughly US$0.14–0.28 per unit against US$0.08–0.15 for foil alone, at a 5,000-unit order. For an example of a mixed-finish build, see the 100 ml square glass perfume bottle with a metal label, where the mark is a physical metal plate rather than foil — the highest-cost version of the same visual idea.

What Does Hot Stamping Cost per Unit?

Cost for hot stamping cosmetic bottles is driven by stamped area, foil grade and how many dies the design needs. Two independent benchmarks from the Chinese packaging supply chain land in the same place, which is a useful sanity check when you compare quotes:

  • US$0.08–0.15 per unit added by one hot-stamping foil, measured at a 5,000-unit MOQ, with a US$150–300 one-time die fee. Cosmetic packaging cost breakdown
  • RMB 0.5–1.5 per bottle (about US$0.07–0.21) for hot stamping, against RMB 0.3–0.8 for screen printing. Hot stamping glass bottle guide
  • Decoration overall is only 10–20% of total unit cost, which is why foil rarely decides the project budget — the bottle and cap do.

Watch the charges outside the per-unit price. The die is charged per artwork and per size, so a redesign after approval means a second die. Film setup typically runs US$30–100 per colour, a pre-production sample set US$50–200, colour matching US$80–200. Ask for a landed-cost sheet rather than a unit price — the gap between two quotes is often just the lines left out.

Payback is asymmetric: a US$0.12 stamp on a 50 ml fragrance bottle retailing at US$45 supports a premium many times its cost, and the die is amortised within the first few thousand units.

What Is the MOQ for Hot-Stamped Cosmetic Bottles?

Hot stamping cosmetic bottles almost never carries a decoration-driven minimum. The MOQ is determined by the bottle mould, the cap and the closure combination, and by the minimum roll length the foil supplier will sell. On existing stock bottles, decoration-only runs can be small because the factory is simply adding one operation to an existing line. On a new mould, volumes in the low thousands are typical, and the die cost per unit falls sharply as volume rises.

Three practical rules when you request a quote:

If your volume is still unproven, an existing stock shape with a stamp is usually the cheapest way to look premium in year one — the same logic behind our 50 ml navy blue cologne bottle with a rigid gift box, where the mould already exists and the budget goes into the finish and the box. For pump formats, the same decoration rules apply to the airless pump bottle range, though the actuator is normally left unmarked.

How Should You Prepare Artwork for Hot Stamping?

Most failed stamping projects were approved with artwork built for printing. Foil transfers under pressure, so the design rules are different:

The same gold mark on smoky grey glass reads warmer and lower-contrast than on clear glass — always approve the proof on the production base colour.

How Do You Inspect a Hot-Stamped Batch?

Stamping is a precision operation: a few degrees of die temperature or a dusty surface can spoil a full run. Good factories control workshop temperature and humidity, check the first pieces of each batch and hold loss rates under roughly 2%. Build these checks into pre-shipment inspection:

Document the criteria in the purchase order — “gold foil 208, 8 mm logo, tape-pull pass, AQL 2.5” — instead of settling for “gold logo”. Our custom perfume bottle range is quoted with these parameters spelled out, because decoration disputes are almost always specification disputes.

Hot Stamping Cosmetic Bottles: Common Buyer Questions

Can you hot stamp over frosted glass? Yes, and it is one of the strongest combinations — the matte base makes the metal read brighter. The frosting must be fully cured first, and the die pressure is usually set slightly higher than on clear glass.

Will the foil survive filling and shipping? A correctly applied foil resists normal abrasion; failures usually trace to under-cured base coating, dirty glass or the wrong foil grade. Specify an adhesion test on the sample and again at pre-shipment.

Can hot stamping match my exact brand colour? Not reliably. Foil is a stocked palette. If colour accuracy is non-negotiable, print the colour and stamp only the metallic element, or move the colour to the sprayed base coat.
